JAFC – Castlemartyr 1-11 Youghgal 2-5
A vital win for our footballers on Saturday evening in Dungourney which keeps our championship season alive. The game was a decider as to which team stayed involved and which side left the venue worrying about potential relegation.
Thankfully the reds – wearing white – obliged after a hardworking performance, by the team that was minus a number of regulars. Early exchanges were even, before Youghal eventually opened the scoring with two points. Eoin Cashman responded with Castlemartyr’s first score and then after good approach play by a number of players, the reds won a penalty which Jack McGann despatched to the net. Both teams lost a player for a black card offence as the half progressed. Scores became scarce but back to back pointed frees by Jack helped our cause as we retired 1-4 to 1-3 in arrears … with the advantage of the diagonal wind to follow.
Youghal doubled the lead straight from the off – however it was to prove to be the only score until a stoppage time goal from Cian Coleman, which at that stage proved just a consolation. In between Castlemartyr scored seven unanswered points to move into a 1-11 to 1-5 advantage. Eoghan Martin who had a very busy game, landed three close range frees and one from play , Jack McGann and Darragh Cashman also produced fine scores from open play but there was no denying the score of the match – Conor Whyte takes the plaudits here. After a very solid hour in goal, he produced a fantastic finish following a lung bursting run up field. (Tyrone’s Niall Morgan or Armagh’s Ethan Rafferty would have struggled to match it)
Eoin Ronayne and Jamie Stack in the central spine of the defense ensured that Youghal were halted in their tracks, although the sea-siders spurned a penalty kick midway through the second period.
Overall, a positive performance for the team on what was a tricky enough evening for football – the result was all that mattered and all involved played their part in achieving it. Midleton’s eye catching 3-14 to 0-3 win over Bride Rovers has put them in the driving seat to top the group – our game against them is in Dungourney in two weeks time, when we will be chasing the second qualifying spot. Alot will depend also on the Bride Rovers/Youghal encounter.

JHL2 Final
Castlemartyr 2-16 Cloyne 3-16
Despite a big effort from all the players, Castlemartyr went down to Cloyne tin the JHL2 Final played in Youghal on Tuesday evening.
This was a good quality hour and despite a fine start, highlighted by a well taken Conor Ronayne goal which saw the reds raced into a 1-3 to 0-2 lead, Cloyne who fielded a strong side were also showing encouraging signs. They carried a big threat in attack, who meant our defence had to be on constant guard. Having found ourselves 2-7 to 1-4 behind on 22 minutes, the trend of the match looked to be going against us. But the team again steadied their challenge and three points from the impressive Niall Morgan (who finished with handsome 1-11) and another from Charlie O’Neill tightened the scoreboard to four at the break – 2-9 to 1-8 against us.
James Lynch in the Cloyne goal then made an ealry second hafl penalty save soon after the resuption – a point from the resultant 65′ had the margin back to a manageable one goal game. Cloyne then kicked on and established a 5 point lead as a similar pattern to the first half unfolded. Again points by Niall Morgan and Darragh Leahy squeezed up the contest. But we struggled to accelerate further and it was Cloyne with their third goal who set sail for home with a seven point lead in the dying minutes. Although Conor Whyte and Nial Morgan’s final point of the day chipped into the advantage – we needed two goals to fashion a dramatic late success. Niall obliged with one six minute into additional time – but it came too late to save the day.
A brave effort by our troops who have enjoyed a fine campaign and will look forward to joining Cloyne in the top flight of the junior league next season.

Golf Classic Update
With just over two weeks to go to our Golf Classic on July 19th/20th, it’s time to update the situation.
We have set ambitious targets this year to increase the number of teams and also to hike up considerably the number of tee boxes. Progress has been made on both fronts but we need another big effort to reach our targets – so please we encourage all members and friends to give this fund raising project one more big push.

Imokilly Football
Well done to Darragh Joyce who had a fine game in the Imokilly football colours as the eastern division made their exit from the championship after suffering defeat against Duhallow in Donoughmore on Thursday evening.
Abernethy Cup Reminder
This year’s Abernethy Cup Final between Imokilly and Ballygunner will take place in Castlemartyr on this Monday evening
It’s certainly a high profile fixture with some top class hurling guaranteed.
