Castlemartyr GAA News
A busy ten day lies ahead on the playing fields with all three or our teams in action in their respective league competitions. So it’s time to take stock of the the current state of play
Junior Football
Saturday at 7pm in Clonmult Memorial Park, Midleton – our footballers travel to play their concluding Amarence JFL1 fixture against the locals.
The recent win over Carrigtwohill has pushed us into the security of a mid table position and looking back we could well be chasing a final place if things had gone a bit differently in two of our earlier games against Erin’s Own and Fr O’Neills.
In both cases, the team gave a good account of themselves, but the initiative just slipped away late on, having been in a decent second half position in these matches. Subsequent wins over Lisgoold, Youghal and Carrigtwohill have put a different complexion on the campaign, and on Saturday, Castlemartyr will be looking to make it four wins on the spin. Such a run would offer plenty of positives ahead of the championship – albeit that is a long way off in mid July.
Currently, Fr O’Neills are looking forward to a league final appearance, having gathered the maximum 12 points. Lisgoold and Carraig na bhFear are on 8 points two ahead of ourselves and Carrigtwohill. However, Carrig’ do have a game on hand, which they play this evening against Midleton. Erin’s Own have 4 points with both Youghal and Midleton, at the bottom, having collected just one point apiece from their games thus far.
Junior Hurling
As stated in our last round up, points are hard to win in the hard fought Amaranco JHL1 for our team, especially when we have been slack on numbers in many games. It’s been a testing campaign, but one which no doubt will be of benefit come junior B championship time. Two games loom on the horizon. First up, it’s Carraig na bhFear away next Tuesday at 7.30pm, followed by a trip to play Bride Rovers on Tuesday 19th at the same time.
Intermediate Hurling
Our Intermediates are currently in fifth place in the ten team RED FM Division 5 League, with five points from five games and a scoring difference of plus 32.
Ahead is a meeting with Dungourney on Saturday week – 7.30pm at Paddy Walsh Memorial Park. Our neighbours are in third place, two points better off, following their comprehensive home win v Erin’s Own last week. Ballyhea (with whom we drew on day 1) are the only unbeaten team in this league, having won three and drawn two of their five games. They are joined on 8 points by Aghabollogue, who won four from five – their only loss was away to Kilbrittain last weekend.
So overall, it’s a tight division, and with all teams having at least four more games to play, there is likely to be a lot of movement over the next few weeks.
Midleton, Kilbrittain are our outstanding fixtures after the meeting with Dungourney.
Last week Castlemartyr were always in control in their home win over MIlford. Mike Kelly’s two first half goals and some classy points saw him lead the charge as a 2-14 to 1-6 interval lead was established.. Cian Murphy was also very unlucky early on to see his fine goal bound effort rebound off the bar, Charlie O’Neill and the influential Brian Lawtion were amongst our first half point scorers.
The trend did not change in the second half as Billy McGann and Ciaran Sice featured amongst our point scorers with the lead stretching to 2-25 to 1-10 by the 50th minute before the scoring closed out at 2-26 to 1-11.
