Season Under Way

Our competitive season got underway at the weekend with two tough away football games, which unfortunately resulted in two defeats.

Under 21 Football

Overall this was a gallant effort by our Under 21 side who played championship favourites Glenville as the game concluded 1.9 to 0.6 in favour of the hosts.
A monster two pointer by our net minder Ewan Wimpenny was the highlight of the first half after which we trailed by 0.5 to 0.4.

Glenville, who were reduced to 14 players dug deep in the second half and the game’s only goal before the fourth quarter proved decisive.
Despite missing a number of pivotal players , our guys battled gamely but couldn’t breach a tight defence that had also seen off defending champions Aghada a week earlier.

Our squad this year was boosted by 8 players who moved up from Under 16 level. The presence of 4 of them starting in defence …Rory Lynch, Jack O Neill, Finn Connaughton and Jack Clifford, is a great sign for the football future of the club.

Scorers – Billy McGann 0.3, Ewan Wimpenny 0.3.

Ewan Wimpenny, Rory Lynch, David Lynch (captain), Jack Clifford, Jack O Neill, Finn Connaughton, Ruairi Murphy, Tom Fleming, Warren Broderick, Billy McGann, Sean Morgan, Darragh Leahy, Cian Murphy, James O’Donovan and Ewan Cashman.

JFL 2 Opener

On Saturday our JFL1 campaign began with a 2-11 to 1-9 defeat in Carraig na bhFear. Daire Coughlan named at 14, scored an away goal, to leave the reds just a point down by the quarter hour 2-2 to 1-4. By the break the hosts were 3 clear but Castlemaryyr were not going away and were again within a point after 45 minutes. However, four unanswered points saw the hosts close the game out inside the last ten minutes.Jack McGann, Mike Kelly and the busy Alex Borderick (on his debut) were amongst the scorers for Castlemartyr in what was a solid effort. Erin’s Own await on Sunday week in the team’s first home game.

Team – Conor Whyte, Declan Kelly, Cathal Martin, Odhran Cantwell, Liam Martin , Barra O’Tuama. Alex Broderick, Darragh Joyce, Jack McGann, Mike Kelly, Jamie Stack, Cormac Lynch, Andrew Kelly, Daire Coughlan, and Eoin Martin.

Junior Hurling

A return trip to Carraig na bhFear awaits for many of the players this weekend as our junior side begin their division 1 campaign on Sunday afternoon at 2.30pm under the management of Dave Fleming. Best of luck to the team in the weeks ahead!

Have You Signed Up?

Time is ticking – this week we make a renewed appeal to all our contacts to please sign up for our membership bundles. There are gold, silver and bronze options available so please support your club – Details and payment link here
The Bundles are a very important source of revenue to help cover both the day to day running expenses of Castlemartyr GAA Club and crucially to continue with the development of our facilities.

Margaret Walsh Memorial Cycle

Best wishes to our colleague John Walsh, who is getting ready to lead off nearly 50 cyclists on his annual charity fundraising 200km cycle on Saturday week March 1st. John is undertaking this venture in memory of his sister Margaret, whose fourth anniversary is coming very near on March 6th.

Like last year, LITTLE BLUE HEROES are the chosen charity and you can help the cause and support John and his screw by clicking on the link HERE

On the day the cyclists will leave Castlemartyr at 8am and undertake a scenic journey from East Cork to North Cork, on to the Vee in Tipperary via Clogheen and return through Dromana and Villierstown and Clashmore, before arriving in Castlemartyr at approximately 4.30m to 5pm.

A bucket collection is ongoing at the Village Greengrocer currently, whilst the crew will also collect on the day. Well known seasoned local cyclists Dave Scully, Patsy Cashman, Michael Holland Marice Cahill and John Flynn are all set to take part in an event that features club cyclists from Youghal, Midleton and Bandon.

Speaking ahead of the venture John said

“It’s 200km so Please God the weather will be fine on the day. Everyone will finish together at the Village Greengrocer where the Walsh family will put on hot food for us. We might get a pint in Clifford’s that night if the legs will be up to it. Looking forward to a great day out again and remembering Margaret as her 4th anniversary is on the 6th March.”

Good Luck again to John and colleagues from all at Castlemartyr GAA Club.
