Castlemartyr Edged Out
The only goal of the game after 7 minutes proved decisive as Aghabollogue were never led thereafter on the way to a 1-10 to 0-10 interval advantage and ultimately 1-20 to 0-20 success. This fourth outing for our hurlers under bright blue skies on Sunday morning, saw our visitors see the game through despite the best efforts of Castlemartyr side who were again minus a number of regular championship starters.
Last year’s intermediate championship winners posted some fine long range points , a number of which were registered during a solid first half showing when Castlemartyr were relient on the accuracy of Mike Kelly from play and placed balls. Mike, who finished the game with 15 white flags (11 frees) to his name, had 8 accumulated by the break. A fine opening score by full forward Charlie O’Neiil and another well taken effort by Billy McGann were the other scoring stats.
Daire Coughlan (2) and Ciarán Sice (1) were the support acts for Mike’s second half salvo which yielded another 7 points in a match where the gap had tightened to just the minimum by the 40th minute. But Aghabollogue always kept their noses in front and were 1-16 to 0-16 ahead with just over ten minutes remaining. The final stages saw an equal share of 8 points leaving the margin again at 3 by the end of the ehour.
The nett result of the recent round of fixtures in division 5 now sees Aghabollogue join Watergrashill, Dungounrey and Tracton, who are all on 5 points at the top of the table. Tracoton, have played 4 games, whilst the other 3 joint leaders have all played a game less and are all still unbeaten. Castlemartyr on 4 points are now level with Argideen Rangers,, with both having played 4 games. Next up it’s a trip up the road to play Dungourney on Sunday week, May 5th at 11.30am. Interestingly, this week Midleton and Cloyne, who are both pointless after 3 games meet in Cloyne on Thursday evening..
Castlemartyr team v Aghabologue – Derek Bowens, Cathal Martin, Darragh Joyce, Barra O’Tuama, Liam Martin, Brian Lawton, Dave Lawton, Ciarán Sice, Mike O’Dwyer, Jack McGann, Mike Kelly, Daire Coiughlan, Darragh Leahy,, Charlie O’Neiil, Billy McGann.
Subs – Niall O Donovan, Andrew Kelly, Joe Stack, David Lynch and Eoghan Martin.
Football Fixture
Its game 3 of 5 for our junior footballers in division 1 this Thursday evening as we host Fr O’Neill’s in Castlemartyr at 7.15pm. Both sides are pointless thus far, so a win would be a great boost going into the final two rounds of fixtures . Best of luck to the reds!
Meantime, in the junior hurling league – our next division 1 outing is listed for May 6th away to Killeagh.
Best Of Luck To Ciarán
Best wishes to Ciarán and his Cork colleagues in Sunday’s key Munster Championship game against Clare. After both teams going down on Sunday, there is now little wiggle room in this hotly contested round robin series of group games.
Lotto
A reminder that the lotto jackpot is now creeping up again with €5,350 to be won in next Monday’s draw. Congrats to the latest €25 winners this week who are – Paddy Daly, James Moore, Rose Beausang, Patrick Shanahan and Cathrina Nyhan.

*A big thanks to those from the club who helped out with stewarding duties at last week’s Ballintotis 4 Mile Road Race. With nearly 1,200 finishers we needed each and everyone of you. Thanks again. Also, well done to the many club members who ran the race, including Dave Scully’s new “elite” training group who all enjoyed the occasion and we believe are already in training for further challenges. Great to see this youthful group clock up the miles!
