New Season Underway

The JFL Division 2 Final on Saturday last against Cloyne marked the beginning of the new competitive playing season for Castlemartyr GAA. The game which was held over from the end of last season also doubled up as the opening game of the new JFL 1 campaign.

Castlemartyr Junior Footballers

Castlemartyr 2-12 Cloyne 2-6

A winning start for our footballers who were always in control in Aghavine.

Goals by Mike Kelly and Eoin Cashman allied to four points from Jack McGann helped the reds to a six points success after a very solid performance. Aided by the wind in the opening half, the winners took a grip early on and led by 1-9 to 0-2 at the short whistle. On a perfect new surface at the Fr O’Neill’s venue, five different players had raised white flags by the 12th minute. When Jack McGann added his third free on the quarter hour mark, the scoreboard read 0-7 to 0-2. The first goal arrived on 27 minutes after a splendid move from deep in defence involving a number of players, good work by Eoghan Martin set up Mike Kelly who obliged with a fine finish.

So, a comfortable 10 point lead at the interval and with Cathal Martin amongst the stand out players in defence, the reds were fancied to see the game through.

Cloyne hit with an early second half goal to trim the margin back, but a hasty response quickly banished any hopes of any realistic comeback. Firstly Mike Cosgrave tallied with a fine individual point, before Eoin Cashman was on hand to register his team’s second goal. Scores became scarce thereafter. A well taken point by James Lawton, capped a fine individual display, with the subsequent very late goal by Cloyne only serving as a small measure of consolation.

Well Done John!

Finally, we say well done to our clubman John Walshe who undertook his annual 200KM cycle on Saturday in the company of friends and colleagues from Midleton and Youghal Cycling clubs. This year’s event was in memory of John’s late sister Margaret R.I.P.

Over 30 cyclists were on the roads of East Cork and West Waterford from early morning and received a great welcome back to Castlemartyr just after 4.30pm on Saturday evening.
