Intermediate Hurling

Next up for our intermediate hurlers is on Sunday morning for round 4 of the Red FM division 5 league. Both Aghada and ourselves will be searching for an opening win of the campaign in a game which starts at 11.30am under the whistle of Youghal’s Eoin Coleman.

Aghada, who have played only two games, shared the points with Argideeen Rangers away the first day out before losing at home to Russell Rovers by 0-14 to 0-7 in their next outing. Looking further ahead there is another all East Cork clash two weeks further down the road as Castlemartyr are due to play Russell Rovers. This game is currently scheduled for the April 30th – same day as Cork v Waterford clash, but may be brought forward to the previous Saturday evening.

Anyway currently all eyes are on the Aghada game on Sunday morning next – hopefully we will get a good following to cheer on the team.

Junior Hurling

Castlemartyr 2-13 Killeagh 2-13

This Monday evening saw our junior hurlers play their second game of the season , with Killeagh making the trip to Paddy Walsh Memorial Park for the rearranged fixture. As it transpired a two goal salvo inside the closing five minutes, denied the reds, after they had held the advantage for the majority of the match.

Early exchanges were even, with the sides having shared eight points in the opening twelve minutes – Daire Coughlan impressive at midfield registered twice with Daragh Joyce and Liam Martin also finding the early range. Castlemartyr then through Niall Morgan, Billy McGann, Darragh Leahy and Liam Martin opened up an 0-8 to 0-5 point lead by the 24th minute. Back came Killeagh with a brace of points and then there followed an excellent reds goal.
After some excellent combination play in the middle, Daire Coughlan showed a great touch to control Billy McGann’s pass and after advancing on goal he produced a fine finish. So at the change of ends it was 1-8 to 0-7 in our favour.

Midway through the second half a delivery from the middle by Mike Cosgrave which may have got a slight touch from Colm Beausnag found its way to the net and Castlemarty looked in a good place at 2-10 to 0-11 ahead. Darragh Joyce and a brace of points from Niall Morgan enhanced the position to 2-13 to 0-13 before Killeagh produced the double late strike. Prior to this Derek Bowens had made some fine saves to deny the visitors, but they eventually found a way through to earn a share of the spoils. On the night Daire Coughlan, Daragh Joyce, Darragh Leahy, Billy McGann and sub Michael Cosgrave were amongst those to make positive impressions.

Team – Derek Bowens, Oisin Cantwell, Eoin Ronayne, Tom Fleming, Odhran Cantwell, Daragh Joyce, Adam McAuliffe, Darragh Leahy, Daire Coughlan, Billy McGann, Niall Morgan, Darragh Cashman, Liam Martin, Colm Beausang, Conor Ronayne.
Subs used – Mike Cosgrave, Charlie O’Neiil, Warren Broderick, Ewan Wimpenny and Cian Murphy ( all second half)

Junior Fixture On Saturday

The junior team are back in action again this Saturday evening at home to Youghal with Chris Scanlon again in charge of the fixture at 6.30pm.

Football Win
– Castlemartyr 1-15 Youghal 0-7

A third win from four starts for our junior footballers leaves them in joint second place on the JFL1 table, level on six points with Carrigtwohiil and two points behind impressive pace setters Carraig na bhFear. who defeated Carrigtwohill last week by 2-7 to 0-7.

Youghal were our visitors for last Thursday’s encounter, where Castlemartyr lined out without a number of regulars. However, the reds always looked the more likely winners here – the advantage at the interval was five points – 1-6 to 0-4. A strong end to the half featuring a 24th minute goal by Charlie O’Neill and points by Jack McGann (2) and Daire Coughlan was key in the win.

In truth Castlemartyr never really looked back thereafter, outscoring the seasiders by 0-9 to 0-3 in teh second thirty minutes, despite the visitors getting the opening two points after the short whistle. Two each by both Jack McGann and Cian Murphy along with another from MIke Kelly quickly re-established superiority, meaning by the three quarter stage it was 1-11 to 0-7. A brace of further white flags by Charlie O’Neiil and two more from Mike Kelly closed out the game.
Interestingly our line up featured a debut in goal for Ewan Wimpenny, a full back role for Conor Whyte and the number 6 jersey for Mike Kelly.

Next assignment is an away date in Rathcormac against Bride Rovers on April 23rd.

Team
Ewan Wimpenny, Odhran Cantwell, Conor Whyte, Niall O’Donovan, Cathal Martin, Mike Kelly (0-3), Peter Foleming, Daire Coughlan (0-1), Darragh Joyce, Cian Murphy (0-2), Jack McGann (0-6), Eoghan Martin, Conor Ronayne, Jamie Stack (0-1) and Charlie O’Neill (1-2).
