Intermediate Hurling

Castlemartyr 3-18 to 0-17

Well done to our intermediate hurlers who recorded their first win in the Red FM League on Sunday with a deserved success over visitors Aghada.

The home team recovered from the concession of three early points, to quickly register an unanswered 1-2, before going to lead by 2-9 to 0-11 at half time. They proved to be much the better side thereafter, outsourcing their opponents by 1-9 to 0-6 in the second thirty – a bright start after the resumption paving the way for what was an ultimately comfortable win.

It was a day when Joe Stack and Barra O’Tuama made a welcome return to the team after injury, but a first half injury to Mike Kelly took some of the gloss off the double boost.

Joe did the spade work for Darragh Leahy to produce an Aaron “Gillaneesque” first time finish as Castlemartyr reached early parity. Jamie Stack and Mike Kelly then added points before Aghada levelled by the 12th minute. Goal scorer Leahy, Joe Stack and the very impressive Barry Lawton were all much involved as the reds stretched their legs to lead by one coming up to half time. Then a second goal arrived as Joe escaped the cover to stretch the advantage. Defensively Castlemartyr had looked solid with Cathal Martin looking sharp and Barra O’Tuama calling the shots in front of solid full back James Lawton.

At half time, the message must have been to drive on and Castlemartyr did that against an Aghada side who introduced both Will Leahy and Jamie O’Hanlon at the break. An early free from Barry Lawton and two sweetly struck efforts by the busy Ciarán Sice had the scoreboard at 2-12 to 0-11 before Leahy landed an Aghada free. Sicey and the hard working Daragh Joyce nailed two more efforts before Barry Lawton embellished his very impressive hour with his side’s third goal after a good set up by Darragh Leahy. At 3-14 to 0-13 to the good , the points looked secured. Both sides added a few more points to their respective tallies in the closing 15 minutes in a period which saw plenty of activity from the bench.

Elsewhere – In Division 5
