Hurling Action

With the JHL2 game between Castlemartyr and Killeagh due to be played on St Patrick’s Day being postponed (no news of refixture), all the focus of attention was on one hour – the Red FM division 5 league game away to Watergrasshill on Sunday as both sides looked for their first win of the campaign.

Watergrasshill 2-12 Castlemartyr 0-7

Unfortunately no joy in testing conditions as the home team built up a 2-9 to 0-5 interval advantage which was always going to be difficult to overturn even allowing for the advantage of the wind. The team did produce a batting second half effort – Jack MCGann and Eoghan Martin with close range points, as Conor Whyte and sub Andrew Kelly made favourable impressions.
Prior to that, in the opening thirty minutes, Watergrasshill, boosted by a brilliant second goal from Sean Desmond, were certainly the better side. Billy McGann, Eoghan Martin and Barry Lawton were amongst our scorers before the break.

Team – Daire Coughlan, Barra O’Tuama, Darragh Leahy, Jamie Stack, Daire Joyce, Conor Whyte, Mike Cosgrave, Ciaran Sice, Peter Fleming, Niall O’Donovan, Barry Lawton, Eoghan Martin, Darragh Moran, Billy McGann.
Subs used – Eoin Ronayne, Jack McGann, Andrew Kelly and Niall Morgan,

Looking Ahead

On the horizon for our hurlers in two weeks time are both teams’ third fixtures of their respective current campaigns. The JHL 2 tie away to St Catherine’s, is currently listed for Thursday March 30th with a throw-in time of 8pm. Meantime, our intermediate game at home to Mayfield is on Sunday April 2nd at 11.30am. Any further updates will appear on the club’s social media pages or in this column next week.

Football Fixture

Next up for our junior footballers is their first home league of the season on this Sunday March 26th, as we take on Aghada at 2.30pmnote change of time from original 11.30am fixture. Hopefully, we can get back to winning ways after the setback in Carraig na bhFear in our last outing. For their part, Aghada have one point from their two games so far, having drawn 1-8 each with Lisgoold last day out, on the back of a heavy defeat against in-form Carrigtwohill in their opener. Both Carrigtwohill and Carraig na bhFear are joint top of JFL1 at the moment with maximum points from their two games.

The other games in our division this weekend are Carrigtwohill v Bride Rovers, Youghal against Carraig na bhFear and Lisgoold versus Cloyne.
Incidentally, our following home game against Youghal two weeks later has now been brought forward from Easter Sunday to Good Friday.

Best Of Luck Ciarán

Best wishes to Ciarán and the Cork team in this weekend’s Allianz League semi final against Kilkenny at Nowlan Park. Tipperary or Limerick await the winners in the decider two weeks later.

Hello Niall!

A shout out now to a man that has worn the red over the last few seasons but is now in sunny Australia. Niall Madden was in touch to say he is a regular reader of our weekly notes and tells us that he is enjoying life in Sydney, whilst making weekend trips to various locations. Niall is in fact still wearing the red and white, but now togging out for Michael Cusacks GAA Club. Temperatures are a bit more of a challenge with the mercury hitting 30 degrees and – water breaks unheard of!.
Best of luck Niall – your county medals are waiting here for you when you return! Hope you enjoyed St Patrick’s Weekend!

Lotto Results

Last Monday’s €25 winners were Jimmy & Diane Smiddy, Cha O’Neill, Margaret Roche, Scoil Iosaf Staff and Sean Walsh. The jackpot is now up to €9,550 for this Monday’s draw.
